One Koala, One Hundred Trees, written by Leesa Allinson and illustrated by Mark Jackson and Heather Potter, has won the Environment Award for Children’s Literature in the Picture Fiction category. The suite of awards, hosted by the Wilderness Society, is an annual celebration of nature and storytelling, and seeks to showcase literature that focuses on conservation, sustainability and caring for the natural world.
This vision turned out to be a perfect fit for One Koala, One Hundred Trees.
“I set out to write a book that would bring greater awareness, empathy and understanding to the plight of our most iconic marsupial,” says author Leesa Allinson. “This award aligns with that goal and acknowledges the importance of deepening children’s eco-literacy and love for the natural world around them.”
“I’m equal parts stunned, thrilled and grateful my debut picture book has won the Environment Award for Children’s Literature. Thank you to Maryann Ballantyne, Publisher at Wild Dog Books, for believing in my story, taking a chance on a new writer and for launching my author career.”
For Mark Jackson and Heather Potter, the talented team behind other Wild Dog favourites One Little Dung Beetle and Little Lon, the prospect of working on another nature-themed picture book was an attractive one.
“We use a lot of references, and you can’t help but learn when you’re working on a project. But there is an aspect of nature I’m always curious about. I like to know what’s out there,” says Mark.
“Over the years we’ve found injured animals and taken them to vets or shelters. I’ve always thought that people who work with animals after fires and floods and things, I think they’re awesome,” says Heather.
“We’re very grateful that people like that are out there,” agrees Mark.
Wild Dog would like to thank the Wilderness Society for recognising One Koala, One Hundred Trees in this year’s round of Karajia and Environment Awards and congratulates Leesa, Mark and Heather on a fantastic, well-deserved win!
